Do I need to change settings when I want to watch TV?
No, our system is fully automatic and only uses the proxy when it's needed to fetch TV content.

How does TV Proxy compare to other systems?
TV Proxy compares very well with other systems and is the most efficient use of bandwidth. Please see our UK TV online page for a complete guide to the various online UK TV systems available.

How good are the streams?
This is a difficult question to answer as everyone has a different idea of what is a 'good stream'. What we can say is that the quality of the picture is exactly the same as you would get if you were in the UK. Using the proxy does not alter the picture quality. Users in distant places such as the American west coast or New Zealand will get a little more buffering depending on their connection speed and the time of day compared to a user in Europe but the picture is still very watchable.

Do I need to install any software?
No, nothing needs to be downloaded or installed to use TV Proxy, you just need to change one setting in your browser preferences. You may however need to install some plug-ins to watch the content, for example, Adobe Flash Player is required to watch most channels.

Can I renew my membership before it expires?
Yes, any additional time bought will be automatically added to the end of your existing membership. Once your membership has expired, your renewal will start from the day it's purchased.

Can I use Firefox browser?
The BBC iPlayer now uses uses the system proxy settings so you will need to follow the proxy instructions for Internet Explorer on Windows and proxy instructions for Safari on Apple Macs to use Firefox.

Can I use the new BBC iPlayer Desktop Beta?
The new BBC iPlayer Desktop software that allows you to download content to watch later uses the system proxy settings so you will need to follow the proxy instructions for Internet Explorer on Windows and proxy instructions for Safari on Apple Macs to make it work. Note that you will need to be connected to the internet the first time you try to watch downloaded content.

Can I use an Apple Mac?
All of the content providers are now compatible with Apple Mac (and even Linux) but please check that the particular channel you want to watch is compatible with your system before joining. Mac OS X 10.4 or above is recommended but 10.3 can be used. Note that for Sky, you can only use an Intel Mac, as their Silverlight player does not support PowerPC Macs.

Why are football matches and movies blacked out?
Due to licensing issues, the BBC and ITV do not have the rights to make all their content available on-line. Some sports and most box office movies are not available on the BBC or ITV web sites. Also some programmes that show football clips, such as the BBC's 'Question of Sport' are not available. To watch football you will need a subscription to Sky.

Does TV Proxy work with Apple TV?
Officially no, the Apple TV device does not support connections through proxies, see this article. If you're an advanced Mac user and can hack the Apple TV to use a proxy, you might get it to work but we regret we won't be able to offer you any support. Better to make your own Apple TV with a Mac Mini and a TV stick.

Can I use TV Proxy from any country?
We have tested TV Proxy in the USA, Germany, Netherlands, India, Greece, Cyprus, Australia, Singapore, Italy, France, Norway, Sweden, Spain, New Zealand, Japan, Russia and Poland without any problems. If your country is not listed it's because we've not tried it there yet. The only place we've had trouble is with member states of the United Arab Emirates and Dubai. Some ISPs in these countries would appear to prevent users from using any proxies but you're welcome to give it a try. Should you be unsuccessful, you will be given a full refund. If you're a network engineer and would like to run some tests for us in Dubai or the UAE, please contact us as we feel sure there's a workaround.

Is it legal?
Difficult to say, whilst offering a proxy service is legal, using it to watch geo targeted content may not be and our members are probably in violation of the broadcasters terms of use. Note that a BBC TV license is required to watch any live BBC TV channels whether on-line or by any other means.
